From China Monumentis, Qua Sacris qua Profanis, Nec non variis Naturae & Artis Spectaculis, Aliarumque rerum memorabilium Argumentis Illustrata, Auspiciis Leopoldi Primi Roman. Imper. Semper Augusti Munificentisimi Mecaenatis by Athanasii Kircheri, Amsterdam: Joannem Janssonium á Waesberge & Elizeum Weyerstraet, 1667.

Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) was a German scholar and a professor of philosophy, mathematics and Oriental languages at Wurzburg. He was instrumental in calling attention to Orient, whose ways were certainly mysterious to the Europeans of the time. This work was based on many years of correspondence with Jesuits active in China, though Kircher himself was never able to go. These finely rendered engravings feature architecture, clothing and other views that would have certainly fascinated Europeans.
