    Description

Exceedingly Rare Civil War Confederate State of Georgia Cartridge Box. The unmarked, standard Georgia pattern cartridge box with internal compartment and tarred canvas inner pouch under outer flap. Reverse with loops for belt or shoulder straps. The front flap with correct three-hole perforations for a CS oval plate [ghost of oval still present]. Distinctive pewter finial on bottom with two steel buckles. The box was never cut for a two-loop CS boxplate. According to accompanying documents, only three of this exact style Georgia cartridge box are known to exist: One in a private collection on the east coast; the second in the Rosensteel Collection at Gettysburg, in the National Park Service Museum and this specimen. An exceedingly rare Confederate relic. Sold together with accompanying documents from prior retailer. Condition: Very good for this type item. Leather is in general pliable, with no signs of red rot. A small amount of rodent damage to end of inner flap and corner of pouch. No inner tin liner present, if there ever was one. Outer flap tab broken. Lower buckles with rust deposits, one buckle missing roller, overall, a fine box with age patina and worthy of any collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
