Babylonian Cuneiform Barrel
    Babylon, Mesopotamia.
    Ca. 1850-1843 B.C.
    5-1/4"H., 4"D at center.
A superb barrel-form dedication implement bearing stylus impressed cuneiform script over the entire surface. The royal inscription is dedicated to Sin- Iddinan, ruler of Babylon and it was placed in the foundation of a public building to sanctify and protect the construction as well as enabling the ruler to record his name and deeds for all posterity. Cuneiform writing was develped in Mesopotamia as a method of recording business transactions, and may have been its most important contribution to mankind. It is the first known record of written history. The principal medium used was clay tablets, cones and other shapes of unfired or low fire pottery. Numerous different languages have been recorded in the stylus impressed, cuneiform script and used not only for business transactions, but as religious dedications, legal and literary recordings and to cater to the vanity of the incumbant rulers.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
