    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Portrait by Franklin Courter.
26.5" x 33" oil on board or Masonite, based on the February 9, 1864 photograph by Anthony Berger. Signed "F C Courter" in the lower right corner. Accompanied by portions of the original backing paper from when it was previously framed. One label indicates it was handled by the Ainslie Galleries at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The other label is a printed statement by the artist explaining his 40-year fascination with Lincoln which supports his claim that this portrait is "from life". A light cleaning would restore the vibrancy of this work and truly make it "come to life".
