A Rookwood Standard Glaze Ceramic Portrait of African American Boy Puzzle Mug by Bruce Horsfall.
    Standard glaze
    4.75" high, with a 3" diameter
    Cincinnati, Ohio; circa 1898

Featuring a young smiling African American boy. The marks on the base are as follows: Rookwood mark surrounded with 11 flames (dating 1897), "711" style, "B-" (artist Bruce Horsfall's mark).

Puzzle mugs, which became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, challenged drinkers to consume the contents of the mug without spilling. Due to the perforated edges of the container, this was quite the feat. The solution lay in a small hole made in the rim or handle, which connected to an opening inside the mug via a hidden tube. Sometimes, other openings had to be closed off first before the drinker could suck the liquid through the tube successfully.

Condition: Fine overall crazing throughout, else fine. Water stain and glue residue on bottom. Beautiful artistry and colors.
