    Description

1855 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge. Number 371. A flat diamond-shaped tag, corners not clipped, holed at the top for suspension, 53mm x 55mm. Manufactured by local watchmaker William O'Connor. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "371" in individual punches; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and "1855" bar punched. The condition is good, with quite a bit of wear to the design elements, dark and rough surfaces with a green tint to the lower areas.

The Mechanic occupation is very desirable because of its rarity and 1855 is a scarce date. Once again, the city had more badges manufactured (5,600) than were apparently sold (3,834).
