1850 Charleston Neck FRUITERER Slave Hire Badge. Number 7. An exceedingly rare flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners, a hole at the top for suspension, 48mm x 49mm. Manufactured by silversmith William M. Rouse. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch with "NECK" the same just below; "1850" bar punched; "FRUITERER" in a rectangular punch; and an incuse "7" punched. The condition on this excavated badge is only fair. The planchet is very thin, with corrosion having eaten through the metal in several separate small areas with edge roughness on the upper left and lower right edges. There is some verdigris present but the elements are all legible.

The extreme rarity of this badge more than transcends any condition problems. This might possibly be the only 1850 Charleston Neck Fruiterer badge in existence! The extremely low one-digit number only adds to its desirability. Don't pass this one up for reasons of condition; you might never find another one!
