    Description

1850 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge. Number 3. A flat diamond shaped tag with clipped corners, a hole at the top for suspension, 50mm x 51mm. Manufactured by a local silversmith and jeweler named William Meredith Rouse. There is no hallmark as none were used during this period. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "3" in individual punches; "MECHANIC" in a rectangular punch; and "1850" bar punched. This badge is quite dark in appearance with a couple of notches and crimps along the edges. The metal has worn through along the right edge of the number 3. The stamped elements are all clear and readable though. The combination of the ultra-low one digit number and the rare Mechanic occupation makes this doubly collectible.
