    Description

[Mexican War] "Assault of Contreras", a hand-colored lithograph from George Wilkins Kendall, The War Between The United States And Mexico Illustrated, Embracing Pictorial Drawings of All the Principle Conflicts by Carl Nebel. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1851. Image size 17" x 10.75", with margins 23.5" x 17.75"; at left beneath image: "C. Nebel fecit.", at right: "Bayot litho", the number "6" is handwritten in pencil at top right corner. Very light soiling to all edges of wide margins, with chipping and a few tears at top, all well away from image; with excellent color and detail, the colorplate is in fine condition with clean colors and a red cast sky falling behind the dramatic battle scene. The heavy fighting at Contreras occurred on August 19 and 20, 1947. Santa Anna had frantically prepared the defense of Mexico City in the previous weeks, although to no avail. The Mexicans suffered a loss of approximately 700 men versus a casualty rate of 60 for the Americans. Santa Anna's forces would fall back to Churubusco, where Scott's forces would continue to prevail and conquer.
