American Empire Circa 1900 Cigar Label with William McKinley Portrait. A lithographed 8.75" x 6" top wrap with a portrait of President McKinley with "American Empire" above and "Deservedly Popular" below- all with embossed gold trim and against a wood grain background. McKinley was president from 1897 until his assassination shortly after the beginning of his second term in 1901. He fought the Spanish-American War in response to the reported Spanish atrocities in Cuba and the sinking of the battleship Maine. After the easy victory in the war, McKinley engaged in a bit of "empire building" by annexing the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Hawaii. This label almost certainly dates from the 1898-1900 period when America was riding the crest of a military victory, and McKinley was running for reelection. A label with appeal to the political collector as well as the cigar label collector. Excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
