    Description

Spotted Elk Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Stem. The wood stem is delightfully inscribed in period ink, "Feby. 9th 1893 Chief Spotted Elk a jolly fellow and my good friend." The bowl carries an old collection label with the number 95, which corresponds to the entry number 95 on the 1930s inventory: "pipe, catlinite bowl, wood stem, belonged to Spotted Elk."

At first the attribution and date may seem problematic, since Chief Spotted Elk was one of the most prominent casualties at Wounded Knee, which took place in December 1890. However, as was the case with American Horse, the son assumed his late father's name when he ascended the chiefship (Please see the web site description of this lot for a copy of an 1891-dated C. M. Bell photo of a Sioux delegation including Spotted Elk). Pipe Bowl 5.25" x 3.25". Stem length 20.5".

From the Rathbun Family Collection. See also Lots 51370 through 51412 for additional material from this collection.
