DescriptionCole Younger: From the Harry Hoffman Collection, a Plains Indian Catlinite "Peace Pipe" Given to Him Directly by Cole. In Cole Younger's later years, he became quite close to Harry Hoffman, and Hoffman, along with Jesse James, Jr., attended Cole at his deathbed. This pipe, in two sections as made, is listed on both the notarized typed inventory (item 20), and the handwritten Hoffman inventory list. It has the much-handled patina of an authentically-used pipe, very different from the clean surfaces seen on so many of these pipes that were made to sell since the dawn of the reservation era. The shaft portion does have two chips, otherwise good condition.
Unfortunately, we were not able to uncover any information as to why Cole had this pipe, although it is doubtless an interesting tale which one day may come to light. In any case, it seems safe to assume that this was a memento of some significance to Younger.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
