Carl Moon, Noted Photographer of the American Indian: Collection of Cameras, Clothing and Personal Items. Carl Everton Moon or Karl as he sometimes spelled his name spent a lifetime preserving a visual legacy of the American Indian. He specialized in photographing Native Americans in their natural state with an aim to showing the Indian as he lived before civilization stripped him of his customs, dress and lifestyle. Over the years he formed friendships with his subjects that enabled him to spend weeks at a time in tribal villages, learning about their culture. Moon's work has been exhibited at The National Museum in Washington, D.C., the American Museum of Natural History, New York and at the invitation of President Theodore Roosevelt, at The White House. This diverse and extensive collection of Moon's personal belongings well represents his passion of photography and the American west. As you would expect, there are several cameras and camera related items including a well-worn Eastman Kodak No. 3-A Folding Pocket Kodak Model C with Moon's initials "C.M." in gold leaf on the case with tripod; a No. 2A Target Hawk-eye, a No. 0 Kodak Brownie, and accessories including a film holder, enlargement mirror and lens covers.
With the collection are several items of Moon's clothing including his heavy ten-button double-breasted fur coat with "K.M." embroidered on the bottom inside hem, matching seal-skin cap and gloves, and Stetson-made National Park Service ranger hat with embossed leather band and Moon's initials "CM" on the size tag (which has become detached).
The collection also includes many personal items of Moon's including a vintage Gruen watch with a beautiful turquoise-studded Indian silver bracelet watch band, brass match safe with lucky horseshoe motif on one side and "KM" engraved on the other, nickel silver flask with "C.M." engraved on the bottom, an animal hoof ink well with the initials "KEM" engraved on the lid, Moon's wooden cane with "KM" engraved on a 14 karat band, Masonic sash, and sunglasses. Moon was an active Mason and the collection include a 1924 certificate of withdrawal from the Pasadena Lodge and a one page letter dated September 1, 1946 from San Francisco's Park Lodge No. 449 saluting Moon as "an American and Mason" and apprising him that "the 'latchstring' at Park Lodge is always out to you." Appropriately, the lot includes a 3" x 5" original snapshot of Moon standing atop a rock formation and holding what may well be the folding Kodak pocket model camera included in the collection.
The collection is further highlighted by the fact that all items are pictured in Tom Driebe's book In Search of the Wild Indian: Photographs and Life Works by Carl and Grace Moon, Moscow [PA]: Maurose Publishing Company, 1997. This inscribed copy features the present collection on pages 356 through 359 and is included with the lot.
