    From the Fitterer Family Collection

Eastern Pictorial Quilled Sioux Calumet, Circa Mid-Nineteenth Century. With a Catlinite elbow-form pipe bowl of tubular form terminating in a squared section surmounted by a narrow raised ribbed spine, fitted to a stem of flattened section, decorated on the lower half with brass tacks along the edges and two hearts in contour beadwork, one in green on a small rectangle of red wool cloth outlined in brass tacks, the second-which appears to be of a later date-in blue beads on a wrapping of red cloth held with sinew wrapping. The stem's upper half is wrapped in braided pictorial quillwork depicting standing figures in dark maroon and orange with contrasting belts, separated by red, maroon, and orange against a white quilled ground, the uppermost portion obscured by a skin wrapping with traces of feathers of a later date. A rare style with considerable display appeal. Length 29.5".

Provenance: Bill Edwards Collection; Albert Miller Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
