Buffalo Hide Gun Case, c. 1890. This thread-sewn case measures 47" long by 8" at it's widest point. There is 11" of tanned hide fringe at the barrels tip. Above that is a 3-1/2" band of red trader's cloth which supports a 2-1/2" strip of glass seed beaded parfleche. Further up the case are attached two beaded crosses on tanned hide. This indicates that this case is most likely of Navajo origin. The cross was the symbol for one of the 'holy' people, Spider Woman, instrumental in their creation. The opening of the case is also trimmed with beaded red wool and the first 10" of the case's interior is lined in a yellow on white calico. Given several small areas of wool loss, this case is in very good condition.
