    Description

An Exceptional Spontoon Ax, circa 1840, ex-Greene Collection and Exhibited on Loan at the Smithsonian Institution in 1972. This beautiful ax with silver/ putter inlay in the handle was purchased in the late 1940s or early 1950s according to H. B. Greene's letter. It was loaned to the Smithsonian for an exhibit titled "Design Is," and still bears the small label reading "#L296 1972" from that loan. It is in beautiful condition with rich patina, and measures 25" in length.
In a 2005 appraisal, American Indian Art dealer Bruce Van Landingham described it as "in excellent condition, very rare, and a wonderful piece of art," and gave it a retail value of $55,000 to $60,000.
