DescriptionLouis J. Rhead: His Classic Art Nouveau "Read The Sun" Advertising Poster. By Liebler & Maass, New York. With its vivid color and dynamic design, this is one of the outstanding examples of late 19th century American lithography. Rhead was trained in Europe, and by the time of his arrival in America in 1888, was at the forefront of the Art Nouveau movement, along with Will Bradley and Edward Penfield. He created posters for a number of American publications, including Harper's, Scribner's, and this one for the New York Sun. At the first International Poster Show in Boston in 1895, he received a gold medal for best American poster design, and around the turn of the century became a leading illustrator of children's books. Condition is excellent, with minor creases from folding and extremely light discoloration in the upper corners of the border, apparently bleed-through from adhesive on verso. Measuring approximately 31" by 48", nicely custom framed.
An extensively restored example, with over painting, paper losses, restored losses, repaired tears, and folds fetched $3220 against an estimate of $2000 -- 3000 in a 2006 New York poster auction.
