    Description

RARE RED INDIAN CUT PLUG MAMMY ROLLY POLLY TIN. This rare rolly polly tobacco tin was part of a set marketed by many turn of the century tobacco companies, each with their own brand of tobacco in hand or in a pocket. This example portrays the Mammy, a black woman with her Red Indian tobacco pack and corncob pipe. Red Indian was a tobacco distributed by American Tobacco Co. This tin considered rare for it’s form is even harder to find for this particular tobacco. Red Indian was not produced by this company for very long. The tin stands approximately 7 inches high, showing wear on the top with a lightly tapped dent at the crest. General surface dirt and some very fine crazing do not detract from the look of this tin, presenting as very good to excellent. This piece covers two collecting fields, Black Americana and Tobacco Advertising, and would make a wonderful display or decorative piece. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
