    Description

Rare Advertising Sign for the Schuttler Wagon. A colorful chromolithograph printed on coated stock paper, then mounted on board, depicting "Ute Pass, Colorado." Printed by Achert & Henckel of Cincinnati. Winding its way down to the valley floor (where a makeshift saw mill and tent village have sprung up) is a long wagon train, with covered wagons marked "Schuttler Wagon." A buckboard to the left bears the same identification and painted on a large boulder is "The Old Reliable Schuttler Wagon." The border area was overpainted at some time, except for a "box" around the title, resulting in some crazing. There is one edge tear in the top border and slight waviness to the board. The frame is old, but not original to the piece. Despite the faults, the plate image is, for the most part, unscathed with strong colors. Circa 1875-1880.

Known as "The Great Chicago Wagon King," Peter Schuttler (1812-1865) was one of the country's leading wagon makers during the era of westward expansion. In the 1850's his factory turned out 1800 wagons per year, selling for $75 each. This advertisement measures 17" x 24", excluding the frame.
