Advertising: Nineteenth Century Color Lithographic Poster for Woman's Faith, a Melodrama. 27¼" x 21½". The poster, by H. A. Thomas, Lith. Studio & Steam Print. 112 Fourth Ave., N.Y., reads at the top, "Academy of Music!/ Thursday, Friday and Saturday,/ and Saturday Matinee/ Sept. 30 & Oct. 1& 2". The image has the cast dramatically posed in a backwoods setting. The poster has a central vertical fold with some weakness at the fold and a few slight tears (professionally repaired) along the edges, else very fine. The plot for Woman's Faith revolves around a man who loses faith in both women and God when he discovers his fiancée with another man. Seeking refuge in the Rockies, the hero enters a series of complex plot twists where he falls in love with a deeply religious young woman who is falsely accused of murder and is being blackmailed into marriage. After he is blinded in a fight with the blackmailer the woman convinces the hero to accompany her to a religious shrine. She ascends the sacred stairway on her knees, praying all the time, and the hero is miraculously cured. The girl's uncle confesses to the murder, and she is free to start a new life with the hero, who has regained his faith along with his sight.
The Academy of Music was located at East 14th Street and Irving Place in Manhattan, New York City. The Academy, rebuilt in 1866 after being destroyed by fire, presented both opera and theater. It was demolished in 1926.
