    All Aboard for Texas!

[Texas Emigration]. Broadside: "All Aboard for Texas!," circa 1870. 6.25" x 12.25". Henry H. Hannan (1844-1879), a land emigration agent out of Swan Creek, Ohio, who was active in selling land in Texas throughout the 1870s, released this broadside advertising a "Grand Texas Excursion" for "Emigrants and Land Buyers Who wish to make a first-class investment and secure desirable homes at the least possible expense, as well as those seeking recreation, the pleasure of hunting, &c." Between 1880 and 1900, due to the efforts of land agents such as Hannan, the population of Texas doubled to just over 3 million residents, the majority of them immigrants from other states. Two large chips in the lower right and left edges, 1" and .75" respectively, have been repaired. Light waterstaining to upper right corner and left edge, but not affecting the text. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17.5" x 11".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
