Hill Brothers Millinery Goods of New York Hat Advertisement Poster. This beautifully illustrated sign, which shows the spring and summer lines of 1885, is one of the earliest fashion advertising pieces of its type that we've handled. Two women are shown looking out over a balcony at Niagara Falls. The deep rich colors are typical of the Victorian era, showing high fashion of the period. This sign, 30" x 42.5" (matted size), has obviously been rolled and shows creases and stains where the rolls overlapped. The quality of lithography during the late 1800s has never been matched and this would surely have much appeal to any collector.

An 1888 book titled Illustrated New York, The Metropolis of Today gave a detailed summary of Hill Brothers who "...[has] long enjoyed a national reputation as importers and manufacturers of millinery goods, while all the partners bring practical experience to bear, coupled with an intimate knowledge of every phase and feature of the wholesale millinery trade... the splendid showrooms... being 250 feet in length, while the manufacturing department is thoroughly equipped with every modern improvement... employment being furnished to one hundred and eighty-two skilled hands..."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
