Description

Cigar Store Tobacconist's Smoking Indian & Tomahawk. Measuring 92.5" tall including the 31" x 33" base, as restored including filling and repaint with some touch-ups to unfilled cracks. Also added to the base is the applied carved lettering. The "S" is missing its top curve to the tip. The most significant crack is in the front and runs from the neck through the hand and down skirt. This damage has been nicely colored over and blends to match the patina overall. The touch up on the feathers and nose appears to be more recent.

An impressive depiction of the determination of this man after winning a battle over the mountain cat laying under his feet. Although unsigned by the carver, this trade figure has all the characteristics of an early example.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
