Cigar Store Indian Tobacconist Figure: "The Indian Hunter" by William Demuth.Expertly restored with great attention to detail. This rare zinc cast figure is an example of the most accurate of depictions of the American Indian. "Wm. Demuth & Co. Manufacturers New York" was a well- known distributor of carved store show figures and employed some of the finest wood carvers of the period. In 1863, Demuth formed a partnership with a Brooklyn foundry operator, Moritz Seelig, to produce cast metal trade figures to sell along with the wooden examples through his catalog. The zinc examples were slightly more expensive than the wooden show figures, but were made to withstand the elements and exposure to weather. As depicted in an ad from the Demuth catalog reproduced in the book Artists in Wood by Fredrick Fried, this figure holds a rifle in one hand and his tomahawk in the other with a replica of the 1881 Indian Peace Medal given during Garfield's presidency around his neck. The Demuth base is no longer under his feet, and the wooden display base has been replaced by one that has been integrated nicely and painted in a design to compliment the time period of the figure. The figure is 5' 4" in height.
