Great Colorful California Advertising Sign, Circa Late 1880s, for Leland Stanford's Vineyard and Distillery. Stanford, a giant of California business and industry in the second half of the nineteenth century, U.S. Senator, and founder of the university that bears his name, was active in the development of a wine industry in the state. He began with the opening of a winery with his brother on the South Shore of San Francisco Bay in 1871. But his major endeavor was the 55,000 acre Vina Ranch along the Sacramento River. The wine produced there was first sold in 1887, but by 1890 it had been acknowledged that the soil and climate would not support the production of fine table wine. Accordingly, the entire production came to be used for making the brandy that is advertised on this sign. The 15.5" x 12.5" sign on card stock exhibits light general aging, but retains very good overall display appearance. Also included with the lot is an 1899 business letter on colorful distillery letterhead which shows the distillery to be the property of Mrs. Jane L. Stanford. She was Leland Stanford's wife and apparently inherited the operation upon his death in 1893.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
