Description

Three George Washington Bookplates

[Bookplates]. [George Washington, association]. Three Bookplates. [London, Washington, D.C. and New York, 1771, 1863, 1890]. All bookplates attractively matted, framed and glazed together in one frame. Frame size approximately 11.75 x 19 inches.
One bookplate is an original bookplate done for Washington by S. Valliscure in London in 1771, one of only 300 printed. Only 137 of these plates went into his books - Washington's heirs gave the remainder to admirers and friends. The second bookplate is a forgery of the original, done in 1863 for the W. L. Wall Company of Washington, D.C. who were attempting to sell a collection of eighteenth century books as being from Washington's library. The fraud was exposed, and the books sold poorly. The third bookplate is an 1890 re-strike, done from the original copperplate (the copperplate was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1907, and never used again).
From the James M. Goode Collection of Bookplates.
