Description
Kickapoo Indian Document Signed by Two Braves and One Chief. One page, 8" x 10. 25", n.p. [possibly Missouri or the future territory of Kansas], ca. 1827. This document, written to "Major Richard Graham Indian agent", reads in full:"Sir We the undersigned Chiefs & Braves of the Kickapoos, It is our wish that there should be paid out of our next years annuety [sic] Due for the year Eighteen hundred & twenty eight, three hundred Dollars to our friend Major John Campbell for money due him from our nation and oblidged [sic]."
The letter was "Signed in presence of [signed] Th. Philibert [signed] Pascal Pinsoneau". The three Indians, whose names are written as Laferron Nissatka, Captain Wawgor, and Pinnache Chief, have signed below "your friends" with "X" marks.
Before 1827, the Kickapoo, who had originally been scattered across modern Indiana, had entered into a treaty with the U.S. in which their Indiana claims were traded for trinkets, supplies, weapons, and an annuity. By 1827, many of the tribe had already moved west of the Mississippi River to parts of Missouri and the future territory of Kansas. The tribesmen who placed their marks on this document were already receiving their "annuety" and had likely made that move as Indiana continued to fill-up with European-American settlers. This document is toned with smoothed folds. Minor foxing and light dampstaining.
