Susan B. Anthony makes use of a congressman's franking privileges

Susan B. Anthony Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages (pages 1 and 3 of a bifolium), 5.25" x 8"; New York; August 5, 1867. A letter written on American Equal Rights Association letterhead addressed to Pennsylvania congressman John Martin Broomall regarding use of his franking privileges. She writes: "Your letter to Mr. Stanton (son of Ms. Elizabeth Cady Stanton) is before me... On account of illness of our Clerk the packages - or envelopes Stanton wished Franked are not yet addressed. So soon as I can get them ready, I will forward to you at your home... The idea of Universal equality is rapidly advancing and destined soon to become universally recognized in codes and constitutions..."

Louis Martin Broomall represented Pennsylvania's 7th congressional district from 1863 to 1869. A progressive in his time, he was staunchly anti-slavery and a strong supporter of universal suffrage. His support went so far as to lend his franking privileges for the purpose doing mailings on behalf of American Equal Rights Association (AERA). The AERA was an early adopter in the use of direct mail to raise funds and advance their message. The use of an elected officials franking privileges would have been of great benefit to the organization.

Condition: The top of the sheet has been trimmed, affecting the top line of text of the masthead. Staining showthrough on the second page of the letter from mounting adhesive on the verso. Light, scattered soiling on the first page, including a light docket along the right side.
