Description
Abraham Lincoln Signed Carte De Visite Taken the Day After his Arrival in Washington for his First Inauguration, Authenticated by John Hay on the Verso
Abraham Lincoln Signed Carte de Visite.
Washington: February 1861. 2 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches. Signed "A.
Lincoln" on the mount at bottom. Lincoln's secretary John Hay
adds an inscription on the verso, "I certify that the
President's signature is genuine. John Hay." With the
Anthony/Brady back mark. The present image was taken on February 24, 1861 by Alexander Gardner in Matthew Brady's Studio, shortly after Lincoln's arrival in Washington ahead of his March 4th inauguration as President of the United States. It was his first portrait sitting in Washington and the first studio image in which he wears a full beard. Lincoln famously grew his beard at the behest of Grace Bedell, a young girl from New York who suggested it would improve his appearance. The image is listed as O-51B in Lloyd Ostendorf's book Lincoln's Photographs: A Complete Album and Lincoln assumes the pose which came to be known as "the inkwell pose" for the prominently displayed inkwell on the table beside the future president.
John Hay first met Lincoln while working in his uncle's law office, which was next door to Lincoln's office in Springfield. He joined Lincoln's campaign after Lincoln won the Republican nomination and assisted John Nicolay in handling Lincoln's correspondence. He continued to work with Nicolay as one of Lincoln's secretaries during his presidency and was a loyal aide and supporter, staying by the president's side in his final moments after he was shot.
Accompanied by two letters of authenticity, one from PSA/DNA and another from Beckett.
Condition: PSA encapsulated and graded Mint 9. Excellent clarity and contrast, light age-toning. Small trace of adhesive just below the albumen touching the tops of the A and L in the signature. Tiny spot of dampstaining at bottom edge. Verso with slight abrasion where a revenue stamp was once likely affixed.
References: Ostendorf, O-51B.
Provenance: The present carte de visite has been in the same family for generations and is being offered at auction for the first time.
