Small photograph of Alan Ladd, (who played the title character in the 1953 film adaptation) signed and inscribed by Ladd, laid in. Octavo. 214 pages. Publisher's tan cloth, boards and spine stamped in brown; original illustrated dust jacket by Harvey Kidder. Minor edgewear. White endpapers; penciled bookseller's notations to the front free endpaper recto, light toning to the rear endpapers. Internally clean and tight, top edge trimmed, other edges rough trimmed; a few pages roughly opened, minor edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped ($2.50); minor edgewear, light vertical crease to the spine panel. Laid in photograph of Alan Ladd measures 102 x 63 mm and has some dried and toned glue residue to the verso. Near fine book with near fine dust jacket.

Source material for the 1953 American Western film by the same name, directed by George Stevens and starring Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, and Van Helfin. It marked the last feature film, and the only one in color, of Jean Arthur's career. It was a critical and commercial success, garnering six Academy Award nominations, of which it won one, and influenced a number of later films and film-makers. The film was selected in 1993 for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
