Description
U. S. House of Representatives: Circa 1857 Double Partner's Desk. Measuring 37 1/2" tall, 46 1/2" wide, and 21" deep. The two-compartment form featuring molded gallery with stylized Federal shields over a pair of hinged slant lids, the whole raised on a stylized trestle base adorned with extensive scrollwork, trellis back, molded detail, and relief-carved globes bearing "AMERICA" banner, the interior of one lid bearing original printed label for "DOE, HAZELTON & CO. / BOSTON, MASS".The present desk was originally designed by Thomas Ustick Walter (1804-1887), the designer of the Capitol dome. It was manufactured by Doe, Hazleton & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts for the newly-opened House of Representatives chamber in the U. S. Capitol building in 1857. These double desks are believed to have been placed in a semi-circular arrangement of desks in the chamber, a design detail that would account for the unusual obtuse angle at which the two sections of the desk are joined. It is unknown who occupied the desk from 1857 to 1873. It was likely acquired by Nehemiah G. Ordway of New Hampshire, Sergeant of Arms for the House from 1863-1873 when furnishings were updated in the chamber during the final year of his tenure. It was sold early in the 20th century by an antiques dealer in Warner, New Hampshire, the birthplace of Nehemiah G. Ordway, and remained in the family of the purchaser for more than 100 years. Interior of left lid inscribed D-28. Made of oak, retaining the original finish with rich color. Sold together with a set of six period rolling metal casters with wooden & brass wheels. We are aware of only two examples of this double desk that have appeared at auction in the last twenty years.
Condition: Some scuffing to front base panel with light edge wear to raised design elements. Some loss/chipping to bottom molding of drawers. Left drawer missing lock. Lateral age crack perpendicular to right pen well. Other minor cracks. Very good to excellent overall.
