Description

Native American Scherenschnitte dated 1844. 18" x 14" framed scissor-cut hand-colored scherenschnitte issued in the wake of a New York City election in 1844. It truly has all the bells and whistles and is one of the finest examples of political folk art in this genre we have encountered. It has a displayed eagle clutching two American flags as well as "dispatching" a venomous snake. It reads: "The American Republican Victory April 8th 1844. Beware of Foreign Influence". The name of the owner, Robert W. Lawrence, appears below along with various carpentry tools. This conforms to information we have been able to gather about Lawrence, a lifelong resident of New York and a builder by trade. A couple of very light stains and minor aging, but remarkably well-preserved. If you like folk art, politics and Americana, this is a must-have item!
