Description
Civil War: Group of Three Named New Jersey State Veterans' Badges.All examples identical in form featuring bronze 32 mm in diameter planchets with the verso showing soldier, flag and cannon with the caption READY TO DIE FOR THE HONOR OF OUR COUNTRY; the reverse captioned PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO [SPACE] VETERAN OF THE UNION FORCES IN THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865. The consignor notes these badges were authorized on April 4, 1908. The badges differ only by suspension pendants and attribution as follows: 1) Planchet suspended by a pinback German-silver 2nd Army Corps cloverleaf badge with the number 8. The reverse is engraved "Chas. B. Erichson / Co. I-8th N.J.V." 2) Badge suspended by a pinback pendant featuring the New Jersey state seal and number on the reverse 1270. The consignor's research indicates that this badge was awarded to Private Jos. W. Howell, Co. "E", New Jersey 39th Infantry. 3) Badge suspended by a pinback GAR-style eagle pendant and the reverse of the badge engraved "MARTIN L. SCHENCK". Schenck is listed as a bugler in Co. "I", New Jersey 2nd Cavalry.
Condition: All examples in very good condition.
