Washington Allston's Copy
[Charles Dickens]. Report of the Dinner Given to Charles Dickens, in Boston, February 1st, 1842. Boston: William Crosby and Company, 1842.First edition. Small octavo. [2, blank], 66 pages.
Publisher's original pink-brown wrappers with black titles. Minor wear and dust-soiling to the wrappers. Corners lightly worn, with small instances of loss to two corners. Minor scattered foxing. Allston's ownership signature at the top of the title page, with occasional pencil marginal notations in his hand. A wonderful association item, and a bright copy, in very good condition.
Includes the text of the speech given by Dickens at the famous dinner given in his honor upon his arrival in America in 1842, for the reading tour that produced American Notes. The luminaries who attended the dinner included John Quincy Adams, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and a renowned Cambridge poet-artist named Washington Allston. Allston's short speech is recorded on page 34. Though feeble at the time, Allston attended the dinner, and met the young Dickens, whom he greatly admired. Dickens even took a pinch of snuff from Allston's snuff box. Before leaving, Dickens visited Allston at the latter's Cambridgeport studio, and the two men parted for the last time. Allston, whom Dickens referred to in a letter to a friend as "a fine specimen of glorious old genius," died a year later at the age of 64. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
