Description
John Ross Treasury Warrant Signed as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. One page, 7.75" x 4.25", n. p., July 15, 1861, ordering Lewis Ross as national treasurer to "...pay to the order of Miss Mary Worsester the sum of One Hund & Thirty seven Dollars out of the General School Fund...this shall be your warrant for the same." Ross has placed his beautiful signature at bottom right. Docketed on the verso. Fine. The latter half of the nineteenth century was turbulent for the Cherokee Nation: they attempted to become an independent nation, they lost their ancestral lands, and they were forcibly removed to the Indian Territory in modern Oklahoma. John Ross (1790-1866) was a leading Cherokee figure throughout these times. He spoke little of the Cherokee language and was, for many, more similar to well-bred country gentlemen than to his Cherokee constituents. Still, the majority of the tribe supported him and elected him as their principal chief until his death in 1866.
