Description

Unusual and Rare Form American Eagle Pommel Officer's Sword, Circa 1830-1840. The pommel is a full three dimensional American eagle with head pointing downward with its beak resting on a small American shield affixed to the eagle's breast. Knuckle bow composed on both sides of a series of deep relief leaf motifs. Hilt perfect retaining 80% of the original gilt. The large langets on both sides depict a relief oval shaped design representing an American shield with the words of the Latin motto "PARTA TUERI" (Defend My Rights) above and below. Spiral carved one piece ivory grip with just some minor age hairlines but about perfect with wonderful mellow patina. The straight single edge 32" blade is profusely decorated with etched and engraved scrollwork, arms panoplies, and patriotic motifs including American eagle, shield, and motto. The blade is excellent retaining much of the original fire blue and gilt. There is no scabbard. A most attractive sword and a unique form in our experience. Prov. Flayderman Collection
