Description
Amazing Section of Bullet-Struck Trouser from a Fighting Ohio Infantryman This impressive section of sky blue jean cloth shows the impact of a minnie ball to the leg of Pvt. William Sherer, Co. E, 101st Ohio Vol. Inf. at the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 31, 1862. Probably while convalescing for two months in the hospitals at Nashville and Jeffersonville, Sherer took time to embroider the large (39" by 20") souvenir leg section of the pants he was wearing with the outline of a simple white yarn eagle and a large red/white/blue 13 star flag. Most importantly, Sherer carefully stitched "TORN BY/A BULLET." in red at the top and bottom of the ¾" hole where the round smashed into his leg. The "Military Record of Crawford County" explains the ball lodged "near the spine" and the wound was still bothering him in his postwar years. He enlisted as a private in August, 1862 and was promoted corporal the following year, mustering out in June, 1865. The item has some scattered holes and spots of fraying but the area around the bullet hole is almost undamaged and the entire piece is extremely sound. It is accompanied by extensive documentation including correspondence with Pvt. Sherer's granddaughter when the relic first emerged from the family in the mid-1990's. A dramatic and historic artifact that would look truly awesome framed.Auction Info
