Ex Dave Scott
Apollo 15: Dave Scott Multi-Mission Flown Flag- Apollo 9 Earth
Orbit, South Pole Antarctica, and Apollo 15 on the Lunar Surface
(in His Spacesuit Pocket), Certified and Signed on Flag, with
Presentation Certificate featuring an Extensive History,
Handwritten and Signed. This 5.5" x 3.875" cloth flag
represents an incredible journey across multiple missions of
exploration. Mounted on a 10" x 12" Apollo 9 certificate, this flag
was carried by Dave Scott on three significant missions: Apollo 9
Earth orbit, South Pole Antarctica, and Apollo 15 on the lunar
surface in his spacesuit pocket. Signed and certified by Scott, it
also includes a presentation certificate with an extensive
handwritten history of the flag's travels.Dave Scott has inscribed on the lower two white stripes of the flag: "This Flag was carried on Apollo 9, To The South Pole (1970) and To Hadley Delta Mountain During Apollo 15. Dave Scott."
He has also handwritten on the certificate: "To Vicki Campbell with best personal regards and many thanks for your contributions to the Legacy of Apollo.
The Flag Above (9-16-S-SP) Was Carried:
On Board Apollo 9, Earth Orbit. March, 1969
To the South Pole, Antarctica, January, 1970
On Board Apollo 15 'Endeavour' Lunar Orbit, July-Aug, 1971
In Suit Pocket to Hadley Mountain, Moon, August 1, 1971
Dave Scott
Gemini 8
Apollo 9
Apollo 15
July 21, 1998"
Apollo 9 was the first test flight of the complete Apollo lunar landing mission architecture, including all spacecraft and life support systems. It was also the first demonstration of the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) backpack, which would later be used on subsequent lunar surface missions.
Apollo 15 marked a significant advancement in lunar exploration as the first mission to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), allowing astronauts to explore a much larger area of the Moon's surface. Apollo 15 also carried an expanded scientific payload, enabling more extensive geological studies and sample collection, further advancing our understanding of the Moon.
Less widely known is Dave Scott's visit to the South Pole. In January 1970, he was part of a NASA contingent of six on an official visit to Antarctica, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and supported by the U.S. Navy. The objective of the visit was to examine Antarctic operations and scientific research in a remote and hostile environment as parallels to similar activities on the Moon and in space. Throughout the journey, Scott carried this United States flag in the pocket of his parka as a symbol of exploration.
Research indicates that only one other flag with a similar history has been sold at auction, though it lacked the significance of having traveled to the lunar surface in Scott's spacesuit and did not include a certificate with the above handwritten summary. This makes the present artifact not only rare but possibly unique in its extensive documentation and direct connection to multiple extraordinary moments of exploration.
This multi-mission flown flag, with its impeccable certification and provenance, is a tangible representation of humanity's drive to explore the unknown. Its travels through Earth orbit, Antarctica, and to the lunar surface capture the spirit of exploration that defined the Apollo era. A fabulous addition to any space collection, this flag stands as a testament to the courage and ambition of Dave Scott and his contributions to the legacy of space exploration. Excellent condition. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
