Description
Ex. Edgar Mitchell
Apollo 14 Flown Silver Franklin Mint Medallion Serial Number
125, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar
Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell with His Signed Certificate of
Authenticity. The obverse of this 39mm medal (one of two
hundred minted) bears the mission insignia of an Astronaut Pin
flying to the moon. The reverse depicts the surface of the moon
with the inscription "Spacecraft/ Kitty Hawk & Antares/
Destination/ Fra Mauro - 1971". Included with this lot is a COA
from Dr. Mitchell on his personal letterhead stating that: "This
letter is to certify that the accompanying Apollo 14 Silver
Franklin Mint Medallion, serial number #0125, was carried into
lunar orbit aboard the Command Module Kittyhawk on the Apollo 14
mission to the Fra Mauro Highlands January 31 to February 9, 1971.
It was in lunar orbit for 67 hours. This medallion has been in my
personal collection of Apollo memorabilia since that time. Enjoy it
in remembrance of that historic period. [signed] "Edgar
Mitchell". Excellent, in a stapled 2x2 coin holder certified
and signed with his initials. These flown Franklin Mint medals are a bit enigmatic. Here is the best information we can offer. A total of 195 Franklin Mint medals (65 per crew member) were flown on Apollo 14. After the mission, 50 of the flown medals were returned to the Franklin Mint to be melted down for production of commemorative coins. This left approximately 145 flown Franklin Mint medals from Apollo 14, compared to the 303 Robbins medals flown on Apollo 14, these Franklin Mint medals are considerably scarcer. These medals are considered very special among space collectors due to their rarity and direct connection to the mission crew. Unlike Robbins medals, which were available to all astronauts in the Astronaut Flight Office, the flown Franklin Mint medals went only to the three-man Apollo 14 crew. Examples with documentation from the astronauts, especially Edgar Mitchell, are highly prized by collectors. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
