Description

Bound Volume of Documents Relating to French Rulers. Large folio, multiple documents bound together with red leather covered boards, decorated with intricate gilt designs. Gilt lettering on spine, with raised bands. Gilt page edges. The documents have been tipped into each page so that the back is also visible. Examples of some of the documents housed in the volume include:

Napoleon Bonaparte Document Signed "Bonaparte." One partially printed page of a bifolium, 9.5" x 14", Milan; August 3, 1797. Written in Italian, signed at the conclusion as Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Italy. Countersigned by six Italian nobles. With docketing on verso.

Napoleon Bonaparte Document Signed "Napoleon." One page, 13.5" x 19.25", Tuileries; December 5, 1811. The document approves the ship Alfred, carrying 157 tons of silk, to sail from Havre to Great Britain. Written in French. Signed by Napoleon as Emperor. Countersigned by Denis Decres as Minister of Marine, Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Girardin as Prefect of the Department of the Seine, and J.P. Bachasson, Comte de Montalivet as Minister of the Interior. With docketing on verso.

Josephine Bonaparte Document Signed "Josephine Bonaparte." One page, 6.5" x 8.25", Paris; May 8, [no year]. Written in French and addressed to an unknown recipient. It reads in part: "...you know my desire to oblige you, and this desire extends to all who interest your family and especially your dear mother whom I very greatly esteem. Tell her I pray you how sorry I am that her headache has deprived me of the pleasure of seeing her. I have never been able to support the idea of embracing her in a moment of pain. I hope my dear friend that you noticed the pleasure I had in having you at Malmaison and that you will wish to come again." Josephine had bought the Château de Malmaison in 1799 while Napoleon was away fighting in Egypt. The estate required extensive renovations, and Josephine transformed it into a beautiful home, with exotic gardens and animals.

Napoleon Bonaparte Document Secretarially Signed "Bonaparte." One partially printed page of vellum, 18.5" x 14", Paris; February 26, 1803. Written in French. Promoting Citizen Veangean as president of the electoral college of the District of Clencon. Countersigned by Hugues Maret as Secretary of State and Chaptal as Minister of the Interior. With the Seal of State at the lower margin.

Napoleon Bonaparte Document Secretarially Signed "Bonaparte." One page, 7.75" x 9.25", no place; no date. Written in French. Relaying a message to Citizen Perrier, Captain of the 17th Company of Mounted Artillery that he had been promoted to the rank of Brigade Chief of one of the new mounted artillery regiments. It states that he was informed by letter, which was sent to him on March 23, but it may not have reached him.

The bound volume has a wide variety of additional letters and documents from and related to French royals and rulers.

Condition: All letters and documents have flattened folds. Varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. One page containing a print of Napoleon has come loose from the binding. Wear and bumping to the spine and corners.
