Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Appointment. One partially printed page, 15" x 18.5", City of Washington; March 16, 1863. This document appoints "Frank S. Nickerson...Brigadier General of Volunteers in the service of the United States." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. With docketing and blue seal of the War Office at the top left. Patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom margins.

Frank S. Nickerson (1826-1917) was cited by Oliver Otis Howard for his gallantry leading the 4th Maine at the First Battle of Bull Run. He later won honors for his efforts in repulsing Breckinridge's attack on Baton Rouge in the Red River campaign.

Condition: 9.5" tear has been expertly repaired on verso. Four areas of dried adhesive residue, one with paper attachment, on verso indicating previous mounting. Rubbed and toned from age. Two small areas of paper loss along integral fold measuring no more than 0.25".
