Description

League of Universal Brotherhood Lettersheet (used). Single sheet, 4.75" x 6.75" (sight), with a letter written on September 15, 1848. The League's pledge is printed at top alongside an engraving of a handshake (one white hand and one black hand). The pledge reads in part: "Believing all war to be inconsistent with the spirit of Christianity, and destructive of the best interests of mankind... I do hereby associate myself with all persons, of whatever country, condition, or color, who have signed, or shall hereafter sign this pledge..." The league was founded by Elihu Burritt, of Connecticut, who would later be appointed U.S. Consul by Abraham Lincoln. Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.25" x 12.5".
Condition: The letter has flattened folds and light toning.
