Description
Thomas Jefferson Land Grant Signed as Governor. One partially printed page, 8.25" x 13.25", Richmond, [Virginia]; April 10, 1781. Acknowledgment of "one lott" of land from Kennon Jones Schealer to Peter Randolph in Petersburg. Signed, "Th. Jefferson." Granted during the height of the Revolutionary War, Jefferson approved this sale amid a series of British incursions into Virginia. Only three months prior, infamous turncoat Benedict Arnold had captured and burned Richmond. Petersburg, located only twenty-four miles south, held strategic value as a hub for river and land transportation. Just days after this recorded sale, on April 24, English and American forces clashed at the Battle of Petersburg. Afterwards, Jefferson fielded significant criticism from Virginia residents on his handling of the conflicts. Docketed on verso.Condition: Paper reinforcements to verso. Additional archival reinforcements to separations along folds and margins, affecting ink engrossment and end of printed text. Signature has faded a bit and there is a tear that touches it at the very end. Toning and staining on recto and verso.
