[Jack Kevorkian]. 1970 Montgomery Ward Signature 300 SM7 (Serial Number 6241922). 12 1/2" (L) x 11 1/2" (W) x 2 1/2" (H). Red and black ribbon. Normal wear from use.

Remembered by the media as "Dr. Death," pathologist Dr. Jack Kevorkian gained notoriety in the 1990s for his controversial opinions on physician-assisted suicide. Kevorkian appeared in national news stories throughout the late twentieth century, ranging from a 1993 TIME magazine cover story, included here, to a CBS 60 Minutes special in which Kevorkian videotaped himself injecting a consenting patient. The latter landed Kevorkian in jail for eight years on second-degree murder charges.

Though Kevorkian left behind a legacy fraught with ethical dilemmas, the medical community today largely considers Kevorkian a pioneer. A New York Times article published in 2011 states, "His critics were as impassioned as his supporters, but all generally agree that his stubborn and often intemperate advocacy of assisted suicide helped spur the growth of hospice care in the United States..." Kevorkian wrote many of his polarizing writings, letters, and correspondence on this typewriter. Accompanied by related ephemera.
