Description
Samuel Johnson. A Diary of a Journey into North Wales, in the Year 1744. London: Printed for Robert Jennings, 1816.8vo (201 x 127 mm). Half-title; with two engraved facsimile plates of Johnson's handwriting; errata slip tipped in at end. Original paper-backed gray-blue boards, uncut, printed paper spine label; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of Johnson's diary of a trip to Wales with the Thrales in July-August of 1774. The diary was later incorporated into various editions of Boswell's Life of Johnson.
Condition: Backstrip chipped; binding broken. Gathering I detached but present. Some light foxing to plates and facing pages. Despite the flaws mentioned, an internally fine copy in original condition.
