Description
Russian Model 1798 Infantry Officer's Award Sword with Etched Blade and Gilt Fittings. An elegant and finely crafted Russian Model 1798 Infantry Officer's Award Sword, featuring gilt brass guard and fittings decorated with the Imperial Russian Orders of St. George and St. Anne. The guard bears two Cyrillic inscriptions reading "For Bravery", a traditional honorific associated with distinguished military service. The hilt retains its silvered brass wire grip and an attached silver bullion sword knot, consistent in style with presentation and officer-grade examples of the Imperial era. The straight, single-edged blade measures approximately 34 inches in length and is profusely etched on both sides with battle honors from the Napoleonic Wars, trophies of arms, and the monogram of Emperor Alexander I. The etching is finely detailed, with floral and scroll panels, geometric borders, and military emblems rendered in deep relief on a stippled ground. The back edge (spine) of the blade is further inscribed in Cyrillic with manufacturing details reading "Zlatoust, July 12, 1824," referencing the famous Imperial arms manufactory at Zlatoust.
Please note: While the exact period of production cannot be confirmed by us, the workmanship, materials, and decorative motifs are highly consistent with 19th century Imperial Russian officer swords, particularly those intended for commemorative or award purposes during or after the Napoleonic campaigns.
Condition: Very good overall as presented. The blade remains bright, crisp, and free of nicks or damage, with clear and legible etching. The gilt guard and mounts show minor wear and patina from handling, while the wire grip and sword knot remain intact and well-preserved. A striking and historically evocative Russian officer's sword, displaying outstanding etching and craftsmanship typical of Zlatoust production.
