Description
[Martin Luther King, Jr.]. Funeral and Memorial Ephemera. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, memorials were held across the country in recognition of the famed civil rights leader's life and work. On April 9, 1968, Ebenezer Baptist Church (King's home church where he was co-pastor with his father) in Atlanta, Georgia, held King's funeral and a series of memorials. Of note in this collection is a pristine copy of the Ebenezer Baptist Church funeral program, titled "Obsequies." Measuring 5.5" x 8.5", this fourteen page booklet begins with a three page biography of King followed by a chronology of his leadership. What follows is a breakdown of the funeral, which occurred that morning and was officiated by Ralph Abernathy, King's closest friend and advisor. A memorial march was planned for directly after: "Martin Luther King Jr. marched for freedom. We march today in grateful recognition of the freedom he has now achieved." That afternoon, a memorial was held on the campus of Morehouse College, also overseen by Rev. Abernathy. Three pages of quotes from Dr. King are found near the backAlso included is a copy of Martin Luther King, Jr., The Journey of a Martyr. New York: Award Books, 1968. 8vo, 62 pages (unpaginated). Printed wraps. Illustrated throughout. This short biography of King was published shortly after his death. Loaded with quotes. [and:] Elizabeth City State College Memorandum for the Mourning of Dr. King. One page, 8.5" x 14", North Carolina, April 5, 1968. Issued the day after Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, the students planned a memorial march in his honor, lowering of the flag to half-staff, the erection of memorial exhibits, the "preparation of a torch . . . to burn each day of morning [sic]," a special edition of the school paper, and a memorial service.
With six additional programs of memorials held in King's honor by such organizations as the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha at Morehouse College in Atlanta (Dr. King was a member of the all-black fraternity) and Elizabeth City State College in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
