Description
[Mexican War]. Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor, Maj. Genl/U. S. A Comdg." One page, 8" x 9.75", Monterrey [Mexico], April 11, 1847. General Taylor is writing to the Adjutant General of the Army regarding rumors of the proclamation of Antonio López de Santa Anna as dictator by his soldiers, two months after defeating him at the Battle of Buena Vista (though Santa Anna declared victory as he retreated). He writes, in full:"Since my despatch of the 4th inst nothing has occurred worthy of note in this quarter. No mail has arrived from the United States and we have nothing from the interior upon which we can fully rely. It is reported that General Santa Anna has been proclaimed Dictator by a part of the Army, and that our troops have advanced as far as the Puente Nacional and even Jalapa. I do no deem it worth while to repeat the many rumours which reach us. By the orders sent in this mail you will learn the measures taken to muster out of service the 1st Regt. Kentucky Volunteers. I cannot doubt that orders will be given from the Department for the discharge of the great body of the 12 months regiments. I have selected New Orleans for the place of discharge of the regiment in question; it being much more economical to the Government to discharge it there than in the field."
Santa Anna was living in exile in Cuba when war broke out between Mexico and the United States. In an effort to return home, he began to negotiate secretly with both sides. He assured the Mexican government that he no longer had his sights on the presidency (a position he had held eight times since 1833), but wanted to utilize his military expertise to oust the foreign invaders. Simultaneously, he enticed the U. S. government with promises of cheap land if he were allowed to return through the U. S. naval blockade. Both governments acquiesced. Once in the country and leading the army, Santa Anna ignored his promises and declared himself president.
Smoothed folds which are lightly toned; lightly wrinkled along the right side. Taylor's signature is bold and bright.
