First edition and later edition, respectively; The Witch's Head with card inscribed by Haggard, dated April 9, 1924, laid in. H. Rider Haggard. The Ancient Allan. London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1920. First edition. Octavo. 195 x 130 mm. [8], 310 pages + 8 black and white illustrations, inclusive of the frontispiece. Publisher's brown cloth stamped in blind to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, picture of white seal from the novel pasted to upper board, in original illustrated dust jacket. Light edgewear, corners slightly bumped, text block slightly shaken, rubbing to gilt on spine, head and tail pushed. Text block edges toned and lightly foxed, bottom edge untrimmed, endpapers toned. Otherwise, internally clean and bright, with gatherings made up of two different paper stocks. Dust jacket lightly soiled, unpriced as issued, light chipping at head and tail, some foxing to edges of inner flaps. Very good book in very good dust jacket.[Together With:] H. Rider Haggard. The Witch's Head. London: C. Arthur Pearson, Ltd., n.d. [19--?]. Octavo. 190 x 130 mm. iii-viii, 344 pages. Royal blue publisher's cloth decorated and lettered in gilt, in original illustrated dust jacket. Corners bumped and rubbed, light edgewear, head and tail pushed with some fraying. Text block edges foxed, top edge lightly dusted, hinges starting, bookseller notations to front free endleaf recto with remnants of label, endpapers lightly toned, bookseller label to rear free endleaf verso, otherwise internally clean. Dust jacket somewhat soiled, crinkling along edges, losses at folds and head and tail affecting decorative ornament piece, verso toned, label of The Ryerson Press pasted over price stamped on spine. Very good book in very good dust jacket.
