Description

[King Charles I]. Document from His Reign. One page (in Latin), 7 3/8 x 6 inches, [England]; March 26, 1629.

Charles I was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from March 27, 1625 until his execution in 1649. Charles famously engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England. He was an advocate of the Divine Right of Kings, and many citizens of England feared that he was attempting to gain absolute power. Many of his actions, particularly the levying of taxes without Parliament's consent, caused widespread opposition. Religious conflicts also permeated Charles's reign.

Together with a later [circa 1840s] steel-engraved oval portrait of the king above an illustration of his arrest, from The History of England by David Hume and Tobias Smollett. Measures 6 5/8 x 10 3/8 inches.

Condition: Document with smoothed folds and light, scattered staining; loss along right edge, affecting text; pencil annotations on verso. Portrait with some edgewear, rough right edge where integral page was removed, foxing and dampstaining at the edges.
